Why am I having problems with eating?
Eating problems affect high numbers of young people and although they are most common in young women, young men are affected too.
Some people say eating problems help them feel in control, or to manage difficult experiences or feelings. The trouble is that the eating disorder ends up controlling you.
What is anorexia?
Anorexia is a disorder where someone deliberately restricts their food intake and loses a significant amount of their body weight, so they become underweight. People often do this to feel more in control and anorexia is often connected with low self-esteem.
What is bulimia?
Bulimia is also linked to low self-esteem and overwhelming feelings. It involves eating large amounts of food and then ‘purging’ through vomiting, taking laxatives or excessive exercise. One of the dangers of bulimia is that, because the person is often an average weight, it is less likely to be picked up on.
What is compulsive eating?
Compulsive eating involves consuming large amounts of food at one sitting, often very quickly in an attempt to manage difficult feelings. People who compulsively eat don’t purge and therefore experience weight gain and may be overweight.
Where can I get help?
If you are experiencing eating problems it is important to get help. You can talk to a Talksafe Counsellor or Peer Mentor or you may find the following young people's section of Beating Eating Disorders website useful.

Hey Mary, It's good you're here trying to get help for your friend. First you should let her know you've noticed that she hardly eats anything lately and it's worrying for you. However handle this delicately as eating disorders are fragile issues to discuss. Once you've done that, you can direct her to the talksafe website so she can read up on eating disorders and also talk to our peer mentors if she wants to. Also let her know you're there to support her. If you would like to talk more to someone about what's going on for you, then you might want to have a chat to one of the Talksafe Counsellors? You can register clicking on the button on the right or calling Talksafe on 020 7812 1770 and it's completely confidential. If you have another question please feel free to ask! >**The next six years are a blur of grief, love and stress. All doled out with great iensntity and generally simultaneously.** This x1000 times this ^ Thanks for sharing your story and putting yourself out there. It's nice knowing there's other people who know what the day in and day out of caregiving it like. Friends and extended family have all said the same thing others here have said about being a "hero." I don't feel like a hero at all. I just feel tired. My little macro'd saying to people has always been, "She changed my diapers, I can change hers." But it's like having a 5'2" 110lb baby that's potty training in reverse. It doesn't end. I spent the first few years trying to handle it all on my own, mostly out of ignorance, not knowing about the many resources out there to help out people suffering with Alzheimer's as well as the caregivers. Respite care services are amazing. I found out about 5 years in that most states have services that work with foundations to train and pay family members an hourly wage (up to 40 hours a week, but it's still a 24 hour job) to [...] Was this answer helpful?
