Families

families

Families can be supportive, loving and fun and they can bring out the best in you. But sometimes during adolescence tensions may surface between you and your parents or carers, leading to arguments and conflicts.

Why do my parents still treat me like a child?

We might grow up quicker than our parents realise - it can be hard for them to believe that one minute you are their baby and the next you’re all grown up.

How can I get more freedom?

Your parents are more likely to be convinced that you can handle more freedom if they see you taking on more adult responsibilities. Offer to babysit your younger siblings, cook a meal without being told or take the rubbish out and you may find they give you a bit more freedom.

I’m not getting on with my parents, what can I do?

Everyone has times when they don’t get on well with their parents, especially when they are going through puberty. If you are having a lot of disagreements with your parents, it may be a good idea to talk to someone.

How can I cope with arguments?

It is a fact of life that differences and difficulties rarely get resolved by arguments. When you come up against a difference of opinion with your parents, why not try discussing the problem, negotiating and trying to reach a compromise. Go on, give it a go!

You can find some more tips below or speak to a Talksafe Counsellor or Peer Mentor.

I already make meals and take on responsibilaty but my family still see me as the baby and it can be difficult and agravating. But eventully you get to grow up and be an adult so I suppose you just have to wait.

I thtink the people that abuse others should get help too because there must be something wrong with there life if they can take it out on another human being.
