How does a woman become pregnant?

• As girls get older and mature into women their bodies start releasing eggs from their ovaries and they start having periods.
• Once a girl starts having periods this is a sign that she is able to get pregnant, regardless of how old she is.
• A woman can become pregnant if one of her eggs is fertilised by a man’s sperm when they have sex.
• Someone who thinks they might be pregnant would need to go to a clinic like Brook to find out what to do.

Can you get pregnant from oral sex?

You can't get pregnant if you either give or receive oral sex. This is because there is no way for sperm from the penis to enter the uterus to fertilize an egg during oral sex. Also swallowing the sperm will not lead to pregnancy as the sperm will be killed by acid in your stomach. But be aware that oral sex can lead to the transmission of STIs such as chlamydia or genital herpes.
